junction box

If you’ve ever had any electrical work done in your house, or if you’ve ever spent any time hanging around an electrician, you’ve probably heard the term “junction box” thrown around. You may even know that it’s one of the most integral components of any electrical system, but you may not know exactly what it is, what it looks like and what it ultimately accomplishes. See below as we’re going to break it down for you:

What is a Junction Box?

Put simply – without a junction box, there wouldn’t be many types of outlets, switches or other electrical hookups in a room. These pieces of equipment make splicing wires and connecting fixtures and devices possible and they’re used in just about every home and building across the country.

What Does a Junction Box Look Like?

It’s a standard electrical box usually found mounted to the framing of a home or building that contains the connection of two or more circuit cables or wires.

Junction boxes are usually metal or plastic and can range from 2 ½” to 3 ½” deep. The box must have a removable cover and the cover must be accessible at all times.

What Does a Junction Box Do?

As mentioned above, a junction box houses the splicing of wires. In simpler terms, if you want to have different types of electrical components in a room, you’ll need to have a junction box to make it possible.

Instead of having to run long wires throughout the entire house that lead back to the electrical panel, junction boxes allow you to connect said wires directly to the breaker.
